An exceptional hemiassarion from Tomis
Lot 1420
MOESIA INFERIOR. Tomis. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Hemiassarion (Bronze, 17 mm, 1.87 g, 1 h), time of Elagabalus and Severus Alexander, 218-235. KTICTHC TOMOC Diademed head of the eponymous founder Tomos to right. Rev. TOMEΩC Draped bust of Roma-Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet and aegis. AMNG I/2, 2565. SNG Stancomb -. Rare. An exceptional example with a splendid glossy green patina. Extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection, formed before 2005.

The fact that this coin was struck from the same obverse die as the following lot 1421 below, while weighing less than half, illustrates that assigning denominations to Roman Provincial bronzes by weight alone, without comparing the die diameters, can be quite misleading.
